The Chandigarh Chair is an iconic piece of mid-century modern furniture originally designed in the early 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in northern India. Created as part of the ambitious urban planning project led by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier after India’s independence in 1947, the chair was developed by a collaborative team of architects and designers including Pierre Jeanneret and Indian architect Eulie Chowdhury. Designed specifically for government offices, public buildings, libraries and administrative spaces, the chair combined practicality, durability and understated elegance.

Crafted from solid teak wood and handwoven cane, the Chandigarh Chair reflects a harmonious blend of modernist design principles and traditional Indian craftsmanship. Its signature V-shaped legs, angular frame and minimalist silhouette were intended to suit the warm climate of northern India while remaining functional for everyday public use. The use of locally sourced materials and skilled artisan techniques ensured both comfort and longevity.

Over time, the Chandigarh Chair evolved from a utilitarian civic furnishing into one of the most celebrated furniture designs of the twentieth century. Revered for its architectural simplicity, clean geometric lines and historical significance, the chair remains a timeless symbol of post-independence modernism and the visionary design movement that shaped Chandigarh during the 1950s and 1960s
